Kia ora my mathematicians! Below is a plan for maths for this week. We are continuing with fractions so be courageous and give it a go!  if you have a look at Whaea Emma's maths below, there is a youtube clip explaining adding and subtracting fractions. Some of you may remember doing these before we went into lockdown - don't worry not as you will eventually remember them all! Remember to upload your results in one quality daily post.

Wednesday 1st September

Fraction Word Problems
Let’s challenge our brains with some real world word problems! Don't forget to write out your working for these questions and share them in your Seesaw post.

1a. On Monday, I read ⅜ of my chapter book. On Tuesday, I read ⅛ of my chapter book, and today I have read another ⅜ of my chapter book. How many eighths of my book have I read so far?

1b. How many eighths of my book have I got left to read?

2. Each day Scout and I go for a walk. On the first day, we walked ⅕ of a kilometre. On the second day, we walked ⅖ of a kilometre. What fraction have we walked altogether over these two days?

3. Whaea Leanne wants to make her Rice Bubble slice during lockdown. She wants to make enough slice for everyone in Tōtara, so she decides to double her recipe. Write out the new measurements of each ingredient she will need if she wants to double them (e.g. ¹/₃ cup of butter + ¹/₃ cup of butter = ²/₃ cup of butter).

Here is her recipe:

- ¹/₃ cup of butter
¹/₃ cup of sugar
- 1 ½ Tablespoons of golden syrup
- 3 cups of rice bubbles
- ¾ cup of white chocolate melts

4. Write your own fractions word problem to share with us on Seesaw. Can someone in your whānau solve your problem?

Thursday 2nd September

Problem solving with Whaea Sue

Friday 3rd September

Now that you have mastered adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, you are going to make a video creatively teaching someone else how to do this! You might want to make a screen recording, use objects in your video or use a piece of paper to help explain your ideas. Clips and iMovie are also great tools if you gave access to these.

Your video must include:

- An explanation of what is the numerator and the denominator in a fraction
- An explanation and demonstration of how to add ‘like’ fractions
- An explanation and demonstration of how to subtract ‘like’ fractions

We look forward to seeing your creative presentations on Seesaw!

Maths Buddy is now being used by quite a few of you which is great! I have gone back to setting tasks in Maths Buddy. They are all the gaps we have missed or need to go back to in class. Fractions and decimals. There are a lot of tasks there, so simply do what you can. I am not expecting you to do them all as they range from Year 5- to Year 8 extension. Good luck and I will be able to see your progress and achievement from the teacher view.

Fractions Around the House

You might not realise it yet, but fractions are everywhere! Your challenge is to find as many different fractions around your home, and take photos of them to upload to Seesaw. Here are just some of the examples I found when I went exploring around my home!

Can you find something that shows:

ロ Halves              ロ Thirds                 ロ Quarters                ロ Fifths                   ロ Eighths

You may need to get creative and make some of these using items such as beads, lollies, stickers or anything that you can divide into equal groups!

Whaea Holly's Maths Group:

Kia ora team, here are some Maths problems for Monday and Tuesday! Once you have completed them upload your workings to Seesaw. Perhaps, you could even teach your whānau how to solve these equations!

Matai Maths Thursday 19th and Friday 20th

FOR ALL ACTIVITIES, DO WHAT YOU CAN, WHEN YOU CAN.

Activity #1- Based on our basic facts tests in class, create your self 20 flash cards based on multiplication and division. Test yourself and see how quickly you can get through them. Film yourself racing through them and upload to Seesaw.

Activity #2- Around your home, there are angles everywhere. Most angles are right angles, but if you look closely you will find acute and obtuse angles in many places (remember the rules ;) take photos of 5 angles around your house. If you have the ability to mark up on an iPad or iPhone, label where the angle is and what the deg is.

Activity #3- Maths Buddy. Select 2 lessons to complete that are based around the Year 7 & 8 level. Higher or lower if applicable. Anything number based is appropriate. The Maths Buddy account details have been sent to parents.

Tōtara Maths: Thursday 19th and Friday 20th August

Design a treasure map!

Using your knowledge of North, South, East and West, you are to design a treasure map of your house starting at your front door.

How many steps in each direction would somebody need to take in your house to find a hidden treasure?

What room will the treasure be in, and what is the special treasure?

Thursday 18th August:

- Decide what your treasure will be, and where you will hide it in your home.
- Draw a map of your house and the route that someone would need to walk to find the treasure. (Don’t forget to add colour to your map, and make it as tidy as possible!)

Friday 19th August:

- Write down the specific instructions that someone would need to walk. For example, “From the front door, walk 10 steps north, and then 4 steps east”.
- Test out your instructions as you go to make sure they are accurate
- Test out your map on a whānau member - Did they find the hidden treasure? Why/Why not?

Extension:

- Make your map difficult! Will you make the person loop back, or go in circles?  You could even add some obstacles that the person has to overcome in order to find their treasure.
