Photography Challenge - Matai & Totara Students

Monday 30 August - Friday 3 September - Whaea Sue

We've noticed lots of you have enjoyed taking photos at home and when you're out and about over Lockdown, so we thought we'd challenge you to improve your photography!

I wonder what sort of photos you like taking the most -

sport?

nature?

family and friends

The Rule of Thirds

You've probably heard of the rule of thirds before. It's when you look at a photo you've taken and divide it up into thirds in an imaginary way, and think of the top third, the middle third and the bottom third, and what you've put in each part of the photo.

You can also think of the thirds as left third, middle third and right third. Just like a tic, tac, toe board.

If we always put our subject right in the middle of our photo - it's easy to do this! - then we miss out on seeing a lot of the interesting stuff around our subject.

So if we shift our subject to the left or right, or to the top or bottom, we can see what is going on around it.

Our photos suddenly look a lot better and more interesting!

Watch this Youtube clip and have a go!

There are also lots of other Youtube clips about the Rule of Thirds, you might find others too.

Have a go!

Post your efforts on Seesaw - we'd love to see more of

the photos you're taking!

Tell us what you've changed, try drawing the rule of thirds on your photo so we can see what you've done.

And..... don't forget to tell us what you like about your photos!

Art Challenge for Tōtara and Matai!

Thursday 19 August - Wednesday 25 August

Cubist Art by Pablo Picasso

Matai have been exploring Cubist art created by Pablo Picasso, and then we've had a go at doing it ourselves.

Being Courageous and Creative is what it's all about!

We used this simple Youtube video to help us. You don't have to be an artist, you just have to be ready to be courageous and creative and  have a go!!  You can stop the video at any point to give yourselves time and replay it as many times as you want.

If you find the link doesn't work, just Google - Picasso with Mr Soper

What you need to get started

Any size of paper - white A4 computer paper would be good but you can use anything

Some scraps of paper

Any colour pencils, felts, crayons you might have

Matai Students

If you've already finished your Picasso work, our next art challenge is some cartoon work. So you could use the following clip or any other cartoon people, just to make sure you're ready!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OZxBGzyu74. ( or Google How to Draw Cartoon Superman)

The artist we're eventually going to investigate, is Roy Lichtenstein, so you're welcome to Google him as well - you'll find some interesting info if you Google Roy Lichtenstein for kids.

Have fun, and enjoy the challenge!
